The Red Tent, which offered shelter to Umberto Nobile and the survivors of the 1928 Arctic expedition following the crash of the airship Italia, acquired a highly symbolic value as soon as it was returned to Italy. Since 1952, the Tent has been kept at the Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci, on deposit from the City of Milan: the fragility of its silk, the long time spent on the pack and the decades of exposure made the restoration work essential, which was completed in 2023. Brevis introductio ad dictamen by Giovanni di Bonandrea was one of the most popular Latin treaties on ars dictaminis in the fourteenth century. Around the middle of the same century even a Florentine translation of Bonandrea’s work was made, probably for a personal use. This book offers a critical edition of this vernacular version, which is contained in manuscript 2323 of the Biblioteca Riccardiana, that dates from the first half of the fifteenth century. The text, stylistically modest, linguistically is very interesting, as it testifies to the restricted circulation of the ars dictaminis lexicon in the vernacular. In 1974, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art named after Mario Rimoldi, hotelier and former mayor during the 1956 Olympics, opened its doors in Cortina, as part of a much older institution, the Regole d’Ampezzo. Thus was born one of the first private museums dedicated to 20th century Italian art, the virtuous outcome of Rimoldi's own collecting activity. The Museum enriched the Ampezzo community with a patrimony that was committed to enhancing the overall artistic heritage of the Dolomite basin, projecting Cortina’s role far beyond that of nature and hospitality. This book offers an innovative analysis of Dante’s figurative language in relation to both the theoretical framework developed in his works and the discursive strategies realised in his poetry. In doing so, it also provides an overview of Medieval theories of figurative language, with their respective concerns and overlaps. The position of the Savoy-Carignano family was extremely delicate and forced them to deal both with Turin and Paris-Versailles, keeping a constant eye on the opportunities offered by the court of Vienna. The Jesuits, Tycho Brahe, and the Confessionalisation of Science in Seventeenth-Century Lisbon

This is a book about the confessionalisation of science in the early modern period. It discusses the cosmological controversies raised by the appropriation of Tycho Brahe’s astronomical theories within the Jesuit milieu, by focusing on the international community of Jesuit mathematicians who taught astronomy at the College of Santo Antão, Lisbon, between 1615 and 1652. The author argues that the cultural politics of the Counter-Reformation Church curbed the reception of Tycho Brahe in this community. Despite supporting the Tychonic geo-heliocentric system and exploring cosmological ideas produced in Tycho’s Protestant milieu, the Jesuits active in Lisbon strove to confine the authority of the Lutheran astronomer to the domain of mathematics. Philosophy was expected to remain the realm of Catholic orthodoxy.

The present volume offers a detailed analysis of a fifteenth-century court debate on God’s unicity (tawḥīd), involving the Ottoman scholars Mollā Zeyrek (d. 903/1497-98 [?]) and Ḫocazāde Muṣliḥuddīn Muṣṭafā (d. 893/1488), as a chance to highlight the dynamics of knowledge production at the time: in post-classical Islamic scholarship, an essential element of the process was scholars’ adroitness in synthesizing arguments from differing schools of philosophy and theology – via close readings of past masters. The translation project of the Sigao Shengjing 思高聖經 or Studium Biblicum Version of the Catholic Bible in Mandarin Chinese was undertaken by the Italian Franciscan missionary Gabriele M. Allegra in 1935. In 1945 he decided to gather a group of collaborators and established the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum Sinense (Sigao Shengjing Xuehui 思高聖經學會), an institute in charge of the translation and publication of the biblical volumes, which still operates today in Hong Kong. Manoscritti, testi e carte (Venezia, 22-27 agosto 2022), organizzata a latere del 24° Congresso Internazionale di Studi Bizantini, della quale il presente catalogo è specchio, mira a indagare l’eredità culturale del secolare rapporto che legò Venezia e Cipro (1473-1571), sulla base dei materiali manoscritti e cartografici conservati nella Biblioteca Marciana, la più longeva istituzione culturale della Serenissima. La schedatura aggiornata dei materiali, accompagnata da un’ampia introduzione, propone un percorso che al contempo fa luce sulla vicenda dei singoli manoscritti e traccia un preliminare itinerario dei rapporti culturali che legarono l’isola al dominio veneziano.

The work presented here advances a hypothetical reconstruction of the planning and programming of the building site, the executive process, the construction and decoration, and ultimately the deconsecration and abandonment of an ancient Buddhist stupa. The chronological context is that of the mid-first to the early fourth century CE. The geographical context is the fertile and rich Swat valley, at the foot of the Karakoram-Hindukush, to the north of the ancient region of Gandhara (today in Pakistan). The study is based on archaeological excavation data conducted over several seasons, including the most recent seasons from 2011 to 2014. This volume is intended to be a practical manual to learn the basics of the Ainu language, in its varieties of Southern Hokkaidō and Sakhalin. Each lesson presents one specific topic that is investigated taking into account both varieties of the language. Three kinds of activities guide the student throughout each lesson to inductively make generalisations on the language that can be supported by linguistic evidence and, possibly, to revise the information they were given as a start of their analysis. In order to do this, the student learns to observe the data, recognize recurring patterns and exceptions, and formulate a description of the language behaviours illustrated by the given examples. A history of the Jewish presence in Venice and in the Serenissima Republic before the establishment of the Venice Ghetto had not yet been written, because there was no relevant investigation into the documentary sources of archives and libraries. On the occasion of the celebrations for the five hundred years of the Ghetto, it was still maintained that only from 1516 did the Jews settle in the city. This volume analyses exclusion processes, segregation dynamics and the forms of discrimination of refugees and asylum seekers in Italy, where the reception system is marked by opaqueness and arbitrariness and is becoming increasingly similar to the model of “camps”. The numerous vibrant contributions present a fully-fledged system of inferiorization, characterised by labour exploitation, housing discomfort, meagre rights and control strategies, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to a sharp worsening of the health, work, housing and administrative conditions. A framework that has found opposition in the daily resistance and in the struggles of asylum seekers.

The essays collected here intend to place the theme of Ruskin’s fruitful and vital relationship with Europe at the centre of a critical reflection, opportunities for an in-depth study and a discussion on issues related to aesthetics, the protection of tangible and intangible heritage, cultural and literary memory. With the Revolution of Dignity (2014), a large representation of the population of Ukraine came out in favour of a geopolitical placement in the EU and NATO. In parallel, Russia intervened in Crimea and the Donbas. Ukrainian society, in addition to dealing with the consequences of a conflict and a delicate geopolitical situation, is searching for its own internal socio-political equilibrium, as the Poroshenko-Zelens'kyj alternation demonstrates. The present collection of studies, involving Italian scholars, focuses on the historical, legal, linguistic, cultural and religious aspects that accompany this adjustment.
